It’s that time again…drum roll… it’s contest time! Each year South Coast Speakers participates in a speech contest. Initially, we start with a contest within our own club and then with our neighbouring clubs. This year, for our Club contest there are two categories – Table Topics and International. The Table Topics contestants include Patricia, Barry and Miriam. International contestants include Ian, Chrissy & Heather.
If other people would like to participate, please contact Patricia asap. Alternatively, there will be a number of time keeping and counter positions to do on the night, which are alway a bit of fun!
In other contest news.. a few Club members will be heading down the Highway on Tuesday night as guest judges at Mornington Toastmasters. No doubt it will be a thoroughly entertaining night amongst very talented speakers.
Remember guests are always welcome at our South Coast Speakers events. Join us just for the meeting or come along earlier at 6:30pm for dinner and drinks.
Can it be? Is it really happening? Yes… it seems (despite the cold weather) that spring is
almost here. But before we hello to the smell of cut grass and the accompanying sound of sneezing let’s say farewell to winter this Wednesday at South Coast Speakers Toastmasters.
Join us at 7:30pm (or come before for dinner) for a relaxed ‘toasties’ meeting with your friendly South Coast Speakers colleagues.
Doing these 9 things will pay off forever
Here is an interesting article from Business Insider Australia entitled “Doing these 9 uncomfortable things will pay off forever“. Amongst key tips like “watch your pennies” and “pick one thing to master at a time” is…. drum roll… “practice public speaking”. And the recommendation… to join a local Toastmasters club of course! As the author says: “Its scary as hell until you realise that everyone around you feels the same.”

Here is this month’s copy of the Leader Letter. An interesting read containing Toastmasters tips and information.

This Wednesday is South Coast Speakers Toastmasters and once again we have a packed full agenda. Join us to hear table topics hosted by Barry, speeches by Phoebe, Frank and Brigitte and a joke from Hans (which is always a highlight!). The meeting will commence at 7:30pm but you can arrive earlier for dinner and drinks if you would prefer.
At our last meeting our new Committee for 2015/16 was elected.
Patricia is our new President (see photo top right) taking over from the hard-working Brigitte (right). Frank will be handling agenda development in the position of Education. Miriam is the new membership officer as well as taking on Treasurer duties. David will be our new Club Secretary, Chrissy is once again looking after the PR portfolio and Heather will be our sergeant at arms. Congratulation to our new Committee.
Toastmaster of the Year:
Chrissy was the surprised recipient of the Toastmaster of the Year award this year, an award that looks at club participation throughout the year. The Toastmasters of the Year trophy will take pride of place on Chrissy’s mantlepiece until our next Changeover dinner.
Club training will be held on Saturday 25 July. A couple of Committee members are keen to attend so if you are interested, car pooling may be possible.
This Wednesday we have a special guest! Phiona Rhodes, B1 Area Director for
District 73 will be attending our Club, to see what we do and to update us on things happening in our District. We look forward to welcoming Phiona.
This Wednesday is changeover night. The night when the current South Coast Speakers Toastmasters committee stands down and a new committee is elected. The format for the night is relaxed, featuring a slimmed down agenda over a two-course meal.
Mario from the San Remo Hotel will be putting together a special menu for the event – $30 per head including a main from the board and a pannacotta dessert.
The evening will feature speeches from Miriam and Phoebe and a poem from Greg.
We hope you can make it! Please note the meeting will have an earlier 7:00pm start time.
Guests are very welcome!
Our next meeting:
Another winter meeting… another winter meme! Our next meeting is scheduled for this Wednesday 24 June in the lovely warm surrounds of the San Remo Hotel. The meeting will be filled with winter-warming speeches by Phoebe, Chrissy and Heather or Miriam with a healthy dollop of fun and frivolity on top.
Phoebe’s speech this week will be part two of her fascinating insight into the Christchurch earthquakes – and a practise run for her presentation to work colleagues in July.
Southern Cross Newsletter
Southern Cross, the online newsletter for District 73 is now available.
The newsletter includes an run down of the recent Toastmasters conference hosted in Tasmania
Joke of the Day
In preparation for Wednesday, here is a pre-meeting ‘Joke of the Day’:
A guy walks into a bar and sees 3 pieces of meat hanging from the ceiling. The guy asks, “What’s this about?” The bartender replies, “Well, if you can jump up and slap the meat, you get free drinks for the rest of the night. If you miss, you pay for everyone’s drinks for the next hour. You wanna do it?”
The guy replies, “Nah, the steaks are too high.”
We hope to see you on Wednesday!
Brrr… happy winter! Don’t be put off by the cold, our meetings are warm and ‘toasty’. Tomorrow’s meeting (Wednesday 10 June) is looking like a lot of fun with speeches by Phoebe, Hans and Greg and table topics from Miriam. Please join us.
We were pleased to welcome Michael Lilley to our club recently to facilitate an ‘Area Visit Report’. Turns out he likes us (well the report seems to indicate this anyway!). Some of the feedback we received was:
The club greets guests exceptionally well.
Meetings are of a very friendly nature and are made enjoyable
through the inclusion of members in the meeting agenda and the
allowance for participation from the guests. Members are very
understanding and supportive towards each other.
Encourages members to complete projects from their manuals and
compete in speech competitions.
There were some things that we can work on – most importantly better tracking of where members in relation to completion of manuals… and this will be worked on in the coming months.
If you are considering attending this year’s Toastmaster Convention, there are still a few days left to grab an early bird ticket at the ‘Early Bird’ price. This year’s conference will be held in Viva Las Vegas.
How quickly time flies! Our second May meeting is here AND we just a few short days away from winter. Brrrr. The next South Coast Speakers Toastmasters will be held on Wednesday 27 May at the (lovely and warm) San Remo Hotel. Join us at 7:30pm for the meeting or earlier for dinner beforehand.
Toastmaster of the year
Do you know of someone that has gone above and beyond at South Coast Speakers Toastmasters in the last year? If so, considering nominating them for our club’s Toastmaster of the Year award. The award recognises dedication, performance and club involvement (including such things as attending meetings, bringing guests and competing in competitions). For more information please speak with Brigitte or Heather.
Would you like to join the South Coast Speakers committee? Being a committee member provides a great opportunity to increase your leadership skills and helps our small club to remain active and dynamic. To register your interest, please speak with any of the current committee members. We would love to hear from you!
Our last meeting… (a quick recap)
Our last meeting was small in numbers but big in laughter. We heard from some entertaining speakers and indulged in a very humourous table topics session – complete with props and a strange array of accents. Brigitte gave us a wild west accent (via Swizerland and Australia), Ian did his best Sheriff impression and Heather introduced us to her showgirl alter ego! If you missed the meeting, you can get a taste of the fun that was had in the following photos:
Brrr! It’s cold and windy outside but we can guarantee that it will be toasty and warm at the San Remo Hotel this Wednesday. The meeting will kick off at 7:30pm or you can meet earlier for a meal or drink.
A Master Class by the current World Champion of Public Speaking – Dananjaya Hettiarachchi will be held this June. Listen as Dananjaya presents his winning speech ‘I See Something’ and learn the skills required to craft and deliver a speech like a world champion!
The event is open to all members and guests for just $29 per head, which includes a 20 page booklet personally signed by Dananjaya and a chance to win a one hour online coaching session with him. How awesome would your next speech be if you could get Dananjaya to coach you, even for an hour? There will be limited places available on a first come first serve basis, and seats are limited to 100 and selling quickly. The event is bought to you by ‘I Can Do Words’ (David Hughes) in association with Toastmasters Clubs from Frankston and Bass Divisions.

Our last meeting:
South Coast Speakers Toastmasters received great feedback from both our Area and Division Governors at our last meeting. Like any good evaluation, our special guests had a couple of small recommendations for our club:
Competent Leadership Manuals
The Governors encouraged all members to complete their Competent Leadership manuals. These manuals not only help us to become better leaders but their completion helps to maintain a positive reputation for our club. We were advised that there will be changes to the educational program of Toastmasters within the next 2 years. Thankfully there will also be plenty of transition time to get where we want to be with our Toastmaster achievements (e.g. completing the manuals that we are currently working on, etc.)
Speech & Evaluation Tips
Each speech should consist of an opening, body and conclusion no matter If its a Table Topic, a prepared speech or an evaluation. When evaluating speeches, always use the third person rather than ‘you’, as otherwise the audience can feel left out.
Where did the last two weeks go?
After a small turnout last meeting, we are looking forward to greeting some new and (I won’t say old) familiar faces at our next meeting this Wednesday at 7:30pm.
We have a jam-packed agenda in store, with some great speakers lined up to present including Lisa, Hans, Gaetan and Frank. The table topics session will be hosted by Chrissy and the meeting itself will be pulled together by the very capable, Miriam. We hope to see you there!
Subs are due:
Don’t forget members…. subscriptions are currently due. $40 is now payable and can be paid via EFT or you can simply bring along payment on Wednesday night. As our Treasurer pointed out, the timely payment of subs keeps the Easter Bunny happy (no one wants to mess with an angry bunny)
